November 23, 2006

This year we had Thanksgiving at our house in Salina. Grandma and Granpa Oetken came over. Grandma fixed the food, with the girls' help. It was so nice on Thanksgiving day that we all went to the park that afternoon- without jackets!

We've been busy. I've been trying to keep up with exercising and work. Michael is doing a nice job keeping the kids while I work late some evenings and weekends. Next- holidays. No rest for the weary...

11/14/06: Michael & Chubby Chase

November 14, 2006

Chase is doing reduplicative babbling now. That's technical but really it's just, "babababababa!" He squeels with delight and also does these other happy noises too. He loves it when Emily entertains him and he especially loves to see the dog.  He's been rolling all over the place and nose-diving as he attempts to grab for things that are out of his reach.

Chase this month: He's so damn cute.

Emily is such a little problem solver. We can't pass stuff over on her too well anymore. She has answers to go around the road blocks we put up. Dang, she's going to make me have to think. It was cute when she was talking the other day at the table, I asked her what she said since I didn't hear her, and she said, "I'm SPEAKING. It's called LANGUAGE." Yes, my four year old is explaining speech and language to me. She must not realize my super powers, er, my profession, yet. She also described two different Debbies that work at her preschool. She referred to one as "the Debbie that is 'straight', not the one that is 'big'. She's in the other class."

Emily also goes around rhyming and asking us to provide a word that rhymes with some target word that she says. Bethany and Emily both recognize letters in the world around them. "L" like in Lauren, "E" like in Emily, "B" like in Bethany... good job! Emily explained to me what I'd have to do when I went to the drive thru at Walgreens for medicine. She told me to drive up there and then I'd have to say "E-M-I-L-Y". I didn't understand, until I found myself driving up and first thing, going "yes, it's O-E-T-K-E-N". She caught on that we basically have to spell our name everytime we go there, but she only knows how to spell her first name. I'm amazed.

Michael had his conference in Colorado. I got to go along for a bit of it while Grandma Carolyn came to watch the kids. We got to dine out at nice restaurants (without screaming kids!), consume some alcohol, go to a movie, stroll around the local shops, and we also went to the mall. These seem like little things,  but they're SO much better without kids! Before we left, we drove up to Estes Park so that we could see the big mountains. It was pretty-- quite a stark contrast to our typical Kansas landscape. My very favorite part about the trip was the uninterrupted sleeping. It was fabulous!

November 8, 2006

Little Chasey Poo-skins is six months old now. Look how he has grown! His darn hair is getting lighter and longer all the time. Michael wants to cut it, but I think it's just too cute to cut just yet. He looks SO much like Bethany did at this same age. His cheeks are even getting rosy like hers too.

He is a bottomless pit when he eats. He sits in his highchair at meals with us, as he has for some time; however, now he associates that with eating so HE has to be fed while he's there. We can't eat. We've started to try to feed him before supper is really ready. Soon enough he'll be eating finger foods so he'll entertain himself at the supper table.

Chase now cries, with almost a perfect imitation of the sound, when Bethany cries. He doesn't do it when Emily cries though. It's a strange thing. They sound the same.  He has slept from around 9pm to 5am in his crib in his room recently. He wakes up crying for milk at 5, but just takes his bottle and goes back to sleep or entertains himself by playing with his hands or feet or looking around while we get the girls ready.

11/4/06: scared while playing in the leaves

November 4, 2006

We've had a busy week. I worked late all week, so Michael got to spend some extra time with the kids. He's not all for that- he said I need to cut back on the late hours. I've been going to the YMCA more often. I tend to do this about this time every year. We'll see how it goes this year.

The leaves have fallen from our neighbor's huge tree, creating a lovely yellow carpet over our back yard. I raked up a big pile today and Bethany went wild. It was cute to see. Emily and Chase joined her, but Chase couldn't handle that for too long. This coming week, Michael is heading off to another conference, so I'll make up for not being home most evening this past week!

The kids enjoyed the fall leaves, well the girls

did. They scared the poor baby half to death.
