JANUARY 28, 2005

Michael's eyes are fixed now. Emily was stressed about having to stay with Aunt Jennifer, so we told her that we'd be back after we went to have the doctor fix daddy's eyes. She was a bit shocked to see him come back with these woffle-ball eye covers that made him look like some sort of Spider man. He had to just keep his dark safety glasses over the bug eyes so that the girls weren't scared all evening. I was there to watch the surgery. He did well and the surgery itself only lasted about 20 minutes.

Michael's bug eyes that protected his newly perfect vision

Today he was able to take off the bug eyes. His vision is now 20/15 and should improve in quality as the swelling goes down. He was so excited that he coule see. He kept asking me to say when I could read  signs as we were driving down the interstate. He could see better than me and he loved it.

Michael, cousin Matthew and Emily all went to see Sesame Street Live in Wichita today. Emily loved it. She actually made it through the entire 90 minute show. There was a little incident before the show started though- Michael was holding Emily and getting to his seat after going to get the crew drinks. As he was going to the seat, he fell down the stairs. Luckily he protected Emily so that she wasn't hurt at all. I guess it takes something like that to take your mind off of your aching eyes!  His shins are black and blue with lots of bumps. Some guy told him, "Good catch" I guess since he was able to keep ahold of Emily AND save one of the two drinks (along with not breaking his own neck). Graceful.

We have another new cousin in the family today. Eastin came three weeks early, but is doing fine. He is the son of my cousin Erika, joining his sister and brother, Tosha and Aiden. There are now nine great grandchildren on the Landers side and we'll have two more babies coming to join the family soon.

Michael is very happy that his Eagles are FINALLY going to the Super Bowl. He has liked them for decades. It's really neat that they get to go the year Michael watched them play too.

Bethany got her one year shots today. She had to get FIVE of them. Poor baby!  Michael and I both went along. It was a good thing because it's so terrible to have to hold her down and listen to her sceam and cry.  At least she'll get to wait to have any more until she is ready for Kindergarden.

JANUARY 22, 2005

It's my Bethie-Boo's 1st birthday. She is the cutest little one year old I have!  We didn't have a party today because we're having that on Superbowl Sunday instead.  Grandma and Grandpa Oetken came up to Salina though. The girls were all dressed up in pretty dresses. Emily played football catch with Granpa Dellane too. We visited and the girls played all day. Emily is very stuck on the Wizard of Oz. She carries the movie case around with her all of the time. Bethany must be getting some teeth, because she had a runny nose and was whiny much of the day.   Hopefully she'll feel better by the time her birthday party rolls around.

JANUARY 15, 2005

My parents and my niece Jordyn came to Salina for my birthday. Dad let me pick out steaks and a music CD for my gifts. He cooked a birthday meal for us. Mom brought a German chocolate cake for our celebration. Emily and Bethany loved having Jordyn here to play with too.

I forgot to mention in my journal that two of my three sisters are having babies.   Jennifer is having her second one in July. Matthew, her first, will celebrate his 10th birthday next week. Joni will have her second girl in late April. Her first, Jordyn, is nearly two.

JANUARY 14, 2005

Bethany had her one year doctor's appointment today. She weighed 20 lbs and was 29 1˛2 inches long. This is the 50 th percentile for both areas. Her development tests put her at about sixteen months. She is doing really well with gross motor movements, but her fine motor is lagging behind. You need the fine motor for speech, so that's why I think she isn't talking much yet. She says momma and looks to me consistently when she says it. She has said ‘hi' and ‘more' once each that I've heard. She gestures a lot and accompanies that with screams and grunts. We'll just have to give her some time on that.

JANUARY 13, 2005

Pam, the girls' sitter, let me know today that Bethany has been a little jealous lately. I guess that the younger baby there is now old enough to eat solid foods. He uses the high chair. Bethany thinks that the high chair is HERS though, so she throws a bit of a fit whenever he is in it. Pam gives her a cookie to distract her. Bethany doesn't wander too far though. She sits right under the highchair, probably to keep an eye on ‘her territory'.

Emily is addicted to the Wizard of Oz. She wants to watch it every time we walk in the door. I just decided to have a no TV, you just have to PLAY rule for the evenings.

I start back to school this evening. I'm enrolled in 12 credit hours for this semester- 6 per quarter/8 weeks. After this semester, I'll be nearly finished with my MBA if things go as planned.

JANUARY 12, 2005

Today is my 28 th birthday. Michael took me out to eat last night. Of course we had the girls with us, so it ended up being more of a circus than anything else. He also gave me a nice locket with a picture of the girls inside. I worked all day and the weather was pretty crappy, but once you're past about 18 years old, the birthdays just don't seem too overly important anymore. I was so surprised when I answered my phone and heard some of my RehabWorks therapists singing ‘Happy Birthday' to me. I can't believe they even remembered!   That really brightened my day.

JANUARY 7, 2005

I let Bethany loose on her food today. She went crazy. She had a spoon in each hand. It didn't matter to her which way she held them. After awhile, she just started digging in with her hands. It was gone pretty quickly.

JANUARY 3, 2005

Bethany really started jabbering over the holidays. It's just nonsense, but she responds. She is signing 'more' when she wants food or her bottle now. She forms the sign very well and uses it intentionally.  Grandma Carolyn caught Bethie feeding her baby doll a bottle. I hadn't seen her do that, but she must have copied sister.  She is a tricky one now too- she can get though some of the child proofing items. Last night she just took the handle off right in front of me where the chemicals are under the kitchen sink. I guess I'll have to go find another type of latch!

Bethany is quite the dancer too. At my parents house, they have hard wood floors. She caught on that she needed to stand on the rug to dance so that she wouldn't fall down. She would scoot right over to that rug as soon as the music started too.

Emily is the ultimate copy cat now. Everything has sunk in forever, and now it's coming back out. She gets into the fridge on her own and drags stuff out all of the  time. The child proof latches can't stop her either. The other morning she dropped something as she was digging through the fridge and said, "Gaat-tamit" (which of course is mommy's favorite swear, "God Damn it". Just lovely! She also used this one when she dropped her kitty in the car, "Kitty, Gaat-tamit" (emphasis on the vowel in Gaat).  That's not the worst of what she says (since that's not the worst of what mommy says) but we'll stop there. Mommy will burn in hell for sure.

On a positive note, Emily has been singing the lyrics to every song around. Christmas songs were just the beginning. She burst out singing songs from the kids music CDs that she's been listening to since she was just tiny. She knew a lot of the words and we actually recognized the tunes. It's amazing.

JANUARY 2, 2005

What a lovely time we all had on our holiday in Otis!  We spent ten days celebrating Christmas and New Years with family and friends. The girls loved playing with their new toys and being able to run over to grandma Jenny's, peek out the window at Papa John, go down the road to the farm to visit Grandma Carolyn and Grandpa Dellane, stop in and visit G and G Landers, or drop by G and G Horner's when we were in Great Bend. With that many grandparents that close, it was a hay day for those two little girls! We took time out to play at the park since the weather was so nice. We took lots of wagon rides over to grandmas too.

Emily loved getting to watch The Wizard of Oz many times. She got some ruby red slippers from momma for Christmas (see pic). She wore off the sparkles on the toes the first day!

Michael put in his first successful pony tail on New Year's eve. Mark the calendar!  Bethany's hair is just long enough to get one tiny ponytail in that sticks straight up. I wish I had gotten a picture. It was too cute.

We brought in the New Year with Michael's parents on the farm. Emily stayed up and watched the 'party' on TV. She enjoyed seeing the confetti and watching the celebrations. We gave out kisses too. She kept saying, 'wanna see the party' when we went back to the farm later too.
